PRODUCTION PROCESS

                                                       PRODUCTION PROCESS

Design thinking is a process which is applied in the digital media environment. It is a philosophy, a set of tools that is used in the process of creating. There are in general three different stages, which are repeated, as a guideline, whether you are creating a product for a client such as film-making or packaging design.

These steps can overlap or be defined in additional stages depending of the nature of the tasks requested.

It is a philosophy designed to solve problems creatively. Focusing on human design lenses, the main aim is to query what you are designing for and what are the needs of the client.

Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test are the key elements of this mapping.

Empathise is understanding, gathering information, interviewing and creating a persona.

Asking who you are creating, making this for, what their problem is and what they do.

Defining is querying what the users need, their problems and challenges then what you can take from that.

Ideating is developing ideas and solutions, matching  potentially products and services. It is when people gather together brainstorming.

Prototyping is when taking ideas you want to develop and turn them into simple testable prototypes. It is making mock-ups that are not real or finished to test them.

Stages 3 and 4 make stage 5. It is all about testing, asking questions, getting feedback, refining, testing.

Design thinking is the philosophy and mind set combined with multiple exercises that you choose or devise to create your task.

What Is Design Thinking? An Overview

As I will begin my group project I realise by watching these videos that a sort of mapping, Thinking Design has to be put in place. It helps to give some direction especially as it is a group project so that everyone contributes equally. As in a group, skills and opinions can be diverse, I think that it is essential to have some guidelines to be on a keen level.

In the video episode,  Jon-Michael talks about three stages of film production.

Pre, Production and Post production

First stage of pre-production is about writing, casting, crew, location, props & costumes, budget and production schedule.

Second stage of Production is the middle, shooting, cameras rolling also called principal photography. This is the most expensive with crew salaries. It is also the point of no return which ends with a wrap.

Third stage is the Post production. It is finishing the film, picture editing, visual effects, colour correction/grading, sound effects, music. It is also the longest stage of the process.

In the two following videos , it is the same Design Thinking theory being applied to the process of film-making and Documentary-making. The main thing is to prepare your material, your research is also a very important factor in laying the ground for your project. The ideating, whether it is on paper or whiteboard in group , is essential to include and incorporate all skills , ideas and planning to the completion of the project to satisfactory results.

For a group project, I think that initially some assessment of all the skills and topics of interest should be gathered to use them as assets. They can then be distributed according to the tasks required. I think that each individual contributes greatly by bringing their skills, opinions and diligence when their abilities and capacities are utilised when challenged to demonstrate their best, in achieving a task to completion.

I think that for a group project Thinking Design is a grounding exercise that should be implemented to safeguard a common goal, to a group designed project.
