                                               Identity Representation and Media

Our group project comes into the broad title of Identity Representation and Media.

Identity is important, from the time that you are born to the day you leave this planet. It gives the person a sense of belonging or not fitting in. In all the strata of society, there are codes or rules that one belongs to. If the person does not fit in those, it will have to find its own. Being allowed to have a sense of identity enables people to make their own stand and make a statement as an individual, therefore enabling a sense of importance and well-being. Thus, developing your own persona and recognition within different cultures.

Whether there are sets of beliefs, symbolic meanings, this development and growth of identity can be a long process for some to attain acceptance and achieve the goal of inclusion in a group or nation of alike.

Some Identities have biological origins, some originate from learned behaviours. People of different cultures, as in tribes, wear the specific clothing to its own which then be copied and reattributed to another group in time, then being given a different meaning from its original source.

Media can influence norms and ideologies. It can be a platform promoting change, awareness and a contributing factor for evolution of society, whether it is social, religious, political, economic or socio-cultural.

The group will be researching about the different groups that they feel personally meaningful to them. How it fits in society and how it is representing in the Media.

I personally will undertake the topic of music, how people belong to different group.

I’m interested in this topic because as a musician, I listen to a varied and wide spectrum of music and have witness how over the years, acceptance and belonging to a certain class or culture has evolved.
